Food Fight fires up as Newcastle favourites return to the ring
Four of the Hunter’s most celebrated chefs will reunite for the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Hunter Culinary Association’s iconic Food Fight, promising the most anticipated showdown in the event’s 15-year history.
This milestone year brings together an all-local, all-legend lineup: Troy Rhoades-Brown, Chris Thornton, Tim Montgomery and Michael Robinson.
Between them, they’ve shaped the spirit and standard of the Food Fight, returning now to honour the region, the association’s two-decade legacy, and the fierce culinary passion that has defined the Hunter’s dining scene.
Each chef arrives with a story that has helped build the region’s reputation. Rhoades-Brown, a Newcastle-born talent, launched Muse in Pokolbin after formative years under Robert Molines and at London’s The Ledbury, creating one of regional Australia’s most decorated restaurants.
Thornton, also Newcastle-raised, forged his path through Restaurant Mason and years alongside Brett Graham, becoming one of the Hunter’s most respected culinary voices.
Montgomery brings a career steeped in European influence and fine-dining pedigree, having reshaped kitchens in Adelaide, Sydney, and Newcastle through roles at The Manse, Bacchus and beyond.
Robinson adds a philosophy rooted in whole-carcass craft and ethical sourcing, evolving from Michelin-level kitchens to his transformative butchery in Branxton. Together, the four chefs represent the region’s past, present and future on one unforgettable menu.
Hosting duties fall to Hit106.9 presenter Jess Farchione, backed by a seasoned MC team featuring Justin North, Colin Fassnidge and Matt Kemp, all former Food Fighters who keep the event firmly in the family.
Their combined firepower will guide guests through a day of culinary theatre, friendly rivalry and the celebration of local excellence.
This year also sees an expanded auction, with a focus on group dining experiences, consistently among the most hotly contested prizes. With syndicates encouraged to form early, anticipation is already building for what is set to be one of the strongest auction programs the event has offered.
The HCA Food Fight 20th Anniversary Edition will be held on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, at Rydges Hunter Valley.
